Challenging Assumptions Tool

Asset-based beliefs are the starting point for strong family engagement practices.

Reflecting on beliefs about families is a vital step toward authentic family engagement. When educators operate with asset-based beliefs about families, they are more likely to build successful academic partnerships with families. Conversely, when educators operate with deficit-based beliefs about families, they are more likely to limit communication and information sharing, thus limiting a families’ ability to play the Five Essential Roles. When district leaders and staff adopt asset-based perspectives, they lay the groundwork for meaningful and respectful partnerships.

Use this tool to explore how your assumptions influence your actions and to encourage your team to identify and challenge any biased or negative perceptions of families.
